Web 2.0 and Technological Convergence

Technological Convergence:
TC allows audiences to acess media content from mulitple platforms on one device. it involves the coming togther of information and communition techmp;pgies to create new ways of producing and distributing products and services to media audiences. E.G. A Smartphone

Web 2.0:
  • The Dot.com boom 1998-2001 was a huge rise on the number of internet-based companies.
  • There was then a shift from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0.
  • It was the possibility of 'staying' online and interacting online which really changed things.
Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborte with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (Prosumers) of user-generated content. It shapes the relations of public/private, work/non-work, home/outside home. Mobile phones enhance social connections that have always existed.

How then is social networking different from more ancient forms of networking?

The major difference is the fact that the messaging services now are instant and are possible from anywhere in the world. This has changed from letters and postcards to facetime and social-media platforms.

Impact of online distrubution:

Music and television can now be downloaded and streamed meaning you can take it anywhere and watch anywhere.

Simulcasting
When a media product is broadcast both online and via traditional medium at the same time. In Television terms, it could refer to programme being broadcast on two different channels.

LoveFilm
Acquired by Amazon in 2011, the service had reached 2 million subs. It had 70,000 films and games which you could download or receive a DVD. Postal service ended on 23 Feb 2009.

Narrowcast
Television Channels that distrubute special interests (Niche) content. Man U TV.

Below-the-line advertising
The distribution of phamphlets, sticker, promotions at the point of scale - Not as exposed.
